CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand vocabulary. The CAFE system can support you as you:
- organize assessment data so it truly informs instruction;
- track each student's strengths and goals, allowing you to maximize your time with them;
- create flexible strategy groups, all focused on a specific reading strategy;
- help students remember and retrieve the strategies they've learned

Assessing Comprehension Strategies
So, you've just used a lesson from The Comprehension Toolkit, or maybe you've just read a chapter from one of Cris Tovani's books; now you're wondering, "How do I assess this stuff?"
The resources below, written by Ellin Oliver Keene (Mosaic of Thought; To Understand) can be used to assess comprehension strategies in small groups ro one-on-one, orally or in writing.
The "Thinking Aloud" assessment should be given first, as it is designed to be an introduction to the others. These assessments can be used formatively or summatively, and they can be administered in whole or in parts. You can provide students with a text, or self-selected texts can be used.

Fluency Resources
Reading "Fluency" is the combination of appropriate rate, accuracy, and prosody. Our CBMs measure rate; running records can help you measure accuracy and prosody.
It's important to model fluent reading for your students on a regular basis; also, make sure they have an opportunity to practice their fluency.
The document below is a student self-assessment for fluency.
