Common Core Aligned Writing Rubrics
The new Common Core State Standards for writing contain a lot of specific skills. How can we determine what, exactly, to hold kids accountable for?
The rubrics below were written to address the specific skills referred to in the CCSS. Each grade level builds on the work of the previous grade level; when a skill is new to a grade, it is typed in bold-face print. This indicates what skills need to be taught; the other skills listed in the rubric should have been taught in previous grades, and students can be held accountable for them.
A second rubric is attached to the rubric for each mode; this rubric addresses conventions. These conventions follow a similar progression to the argumentative rubric, the informational rubric, and the narrative rubric. The skill progression is based on the CCSS Language standards. The rationale for a second rubric is that the sheer volume of conventions would skew a holistic rubric score if they were included.
A scoring guide for each rubric row, as well as a holistic score, is included. This scoring guide is based on the Angoff method for determining proficiency.
